God gave Jesus an opportunity to quit, gave Him a choice in the Garden!--And yet He deliberately chose to go ahead and suffer for you and me. Think of that! He said, "Father, if it be Thy will, let this cup pass from Me"--the cup of suffering.--"Nevertheless, not My will, but Thine be done!" (Mat.26:39) Jesus could have taken the easy way out and refused to suffer so terribly for our sins, but He didn't quit!
"No greater love hath any man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (Jn.15:13), and Jesus was the Friend Who took the punishment for us! "God made Him to be sin for us, Who knew no sin." (2Cor.5:21) To make you clean, Jesus had to get dirty. God's Word says, "He bore your sins in His Own body on the tree." (1Pet.2:24) He had your sins on Him when He died! He even had to let God turn His back on Him, think of it! "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" (Mk.15:34)
Jesus in His death suffered not only physically, but also spiritually, such as the unsaved sinner in the afterlife for his sins.--Three days and three nights in Hell! (Mat.12:40) He suffered and died that we might be saved! Such Love!
